Michelia yunnanensis (Now Syn: Magnolia dianica)
Description
A dense bushy new selection of the Chinese species, Michelia yunnanensis, selected by Glyn Church at Woodleigh Garden, New Plymouth, New Zealand. This slow growing medium-large evergreen shrub has rounded dark green glossy foliage with velvety brown undersides. In late spring the plant is massed with hundreds of velvety brown flower buds which open into elegant cup shaped pure white magnolia like blooms (October in NZ – April for northern hemisphere). Because of the slow growing busy habit plants rarely need trimming. Gail’s Favourite’ is ideal used as a feature plant in the modern garden / landscape – when young it also make a great pot specimen on the deck or patio. A real late spring beauty. Best grown in lime free soils in full with shelter from strong winds. Hardy. 2 x 2m.
Bloom
Masses of velvety bronze flower buds develop into elegance cupped shaped pure white magnolia like blooms in late spring. Flowering is a good 3-4 weeks later than other varieties.

Rounded glossy dark green foliage with velvety brown underside.
Habit
Tight bushy rounded habit 2 x 2m.
Culture
Best grown in moist fertile lime free soils in full with shelter from strong winds. Will tolerate shade but best flowering is achieved when grown in full sun. Very drought tolerant.
